I’m at a complete loss for words

By Athletes' Acceleration | August 12th, 2008

I’m going to admit I’m a little bit frustrated.

Despite my best efforts, I don’t think I’m getting
my message across to some of you.

This thought was highlighted by two completely
crazy emails I got yesterday.

It’s a pattern that needs to be broken.

Good message. The point regarding the heavy lifting 13 year old strikes a particular cord with me as I just listened to your inerview with Barry Ross who said strength/lifting only (I understand thier are some specifics as well) will make you fast. That theory would make the strongest man the fastest man and basically means that anyone can be Carl Lewis if they increase strength or that you are born with what you are born with (speed cannot be taught) and strength is the only factor that can maximize your potential.

    Keep up the good work.

    hello latif
i listened to you today and i was a little surprised ..i have not invested yet and i am a personal trainer ,,however not in speed training and not in training children..my son is 11 years and i believe has gifts in running..future to tell..but i have to say that what you say on your free stuff your emails that you send is very good basic advice especially on what not to do !! i dont train my son with weights yet
i train him with basic bodyweight compound exercises, flexability and short drill runs (based on yur advice re recovery etc , running techniques and longer runs at a moderste pace ..he chats all the way lol with our dog..enhaphis on pleasure for him and basic components of good health ..i just want to say i love your site and the info included and i really do not hope iam not added to your crazy email list ..
i refer to you to show my ex marine husband that his drills that he wants our son to do are unecessary yet and i thank you for that ..all the best ..debbie

I agree with everything you have said and done on the tapes. The information is simple, and complete. The videos are well put together. I love your passion and attitude about training. We need more real coaches such as yourself to ensure the wellbeing and succsess of Athletes. Thanks.

Hi Latif. Interesting that there are many beliefs that speed can be taught. I strongly disagree with this. I believe that fast runners can become faster. But I have been a slow runner all my life and will never be fast. I have tried and as a result have became quicker over a few yards. I guess you could call it being sharper, but certainly not fast over 100m. It is not possible. Many of therese sprinters are born with a certain percentage of fast twitch muscle fibres in their legs. This is genetic.

    Hi Latif
I am interested in speed training but it is for myself but not as a coach. I am an old man 50 yrs almost and it is a question of time that I can put in.o need to chase but I may come back and buy your program at some point

  7. Tim Graf Says:

    Latif,

I totally oppose weight training before high school do to the softness of the growth plates. With out the proper speed work to compliment high school age and older there are 3 things that slow an athlete down.
    1. Heavy weight training.
    2. treadmills.
    3. Long slow distance running.
All 3 of these things “retrain” the quick twitch muscle fibers to fire slowly”.
There are a lot of bad coaches out there in it only for the money. Parents need to do their home work.
Since when does “strength and conditioning” qualify anyone to teach running mechanics and speed?

  8. Heff Says:

I run a speed camp and have coached sprinters and speed for many years.

A week ago a parent I know who has a son playing minor league baseball.
He grabbed me and said Heff will you work with my son in the off season, he has gotten slow, of course he gained 23 pounds this year!! According to the parent he needed it.

He said maybe you can work with him 3 or 4 times. I think they think it is magic.

    good luck
    Heff

  10. Jim Pennington Says:

    Hello, Latif-

certaqinly has been a while, hasn’t it? I’m still working with my grandson, in which I use your complete athletic acelleration program. Having listened to your interview on Barry Ross prompted me to get in contact with him. His strength development program is very impressive and is based on “Physics” of running. He is very much against training an athletic into fatigue, A must is: Dynamic W/U, timed sprints w/proper rest periods. miss a timed sprint and workout is over. Before lifting weights Barry met with my grandson, 3-5 reps, w/rest, push ups, core work, static stretching. His running form training comes from your DVD. This year at football “Hell Week” he matched speed with those fast little guys that outran him last year. My daughter and I continue to subscribe and read up on speed development, improved his diet. We hope to eventually have Malik on small portion of 5 meals a day. For a 10 year old with cronic ashma, he is exceptional and without your program it has been successful over a short period of time.. For those oppose weght training I aski, “what type of weight training”, because it varies.

    Good Luck

    Jim
