(Video) How do you become faster at top speed?

By Athletes' Acceleration | September 2nd, 2008

A couple weeks ago I sent you an email asking for
your speed training and sports performance
questions.

As expected I got a ton of responses.

And I’ve started to answer them.

Got questions about athletic development?

Ask them here.

To your success,

Latif, im a high school athlete and you wouldnt believe the poor coaching that goes on for my track and field program. none of them have any idea that this even exists, let alone try to teach it.

  2. Bryan Says:

Latif, I am happy that you covered the start cues, I agree that without good mechanics in the first 10 yards 30+yds would be a disaster.
However, I am looking forward to your response to the initial question which was how to train top speed. The concept of floating is confusing to me and additional information on top of what was covered in CST would be very helpful.

  3. Russ Hoggard Says:

You can’t handle speed training properly with out a preparation base. You shouldn’t do pliometrics until you can squat your own body weight. (If you want throw these two valuable training aids away don’t complain if a serious coach does not spend too much time sorting out your problems. You should not think of yourself as a serious athlete unless you are prepared to act like one…and coaches should not hide under the non-de-plume of coach unless the are prepared to do the hard yards.
If you are not prepared to devote 12 months of the year to your track program don’t expect huge improvements. Every athlete that joins my group (Mainly College athletes) gets this message.
“We don’t have any magic wands.Any improvement that you get will come from hard work and communication. You can stay and have fun or you can gradually become a hard core athlete and have more fun. Your Call!”
You would be suprised how many athletes stay.So what’s the answer to “How do you become faster at top speed” Work Harder !
    Communicate ! Ask questions !

  4. James Says:

Thanks for the information. I like this method of demonstrating technique. Please continue with acceleration tips

  5. Cletis Howard Says:

Can sprinters and quartermilers be trained on the same program?

  6. Nick Says:

Good words & presentation, Latif! We believe in the same approach. “You have get the simple task done before you advance to the complex.” We really scrutinize & time those first ten yards.

  7. Alan Says:

Once again a great presentation, and a great advert for CST.
Anyone out there who thinks training for speed is not a skill should have a quick look at the first second of film shown here and note the mechanics of starting. I heard someone say speed training is not rocket science the other day, well it may not be rocket science but it is science and if you dont apply the science you wont gain the skill.
