Speed, Strength, and Conditioning -
Answer To Question #10

Question #10:

I have a 13 year old son who plays Australian football, and I have been searching the web for a program to increase his speed and agility.

He is a good endurance athlete for his size ( 5ft 7in and 145 pounds), but needs to get faster to excel in Aust. Football.

Will your program cover training for Australian Football?

Will B.

Answer by Latif Thomas:

At 13 your son needs to become a better athlete, not a better Australian Rules Football Player.

The fact is that a need for sport specific training for non-elite athletes is generally a myth. Developing the speed of an athlete, regardless of sport, requires improving their overall athletic ability by developing the 5 biomotor skills required for success in any sport: speed, strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance.

We will use the same principles in Australian Rules Football as we would in football, track and field, soccer, etc.

In fact, you can click here to listen to my recent conversation on the topic with Strength and Conditioning Hall of Famer Al Vermeil. Al is the only Strength and Conditioning Coach to work for the NFL, NBA *and* MLB. He's also the only coach ever to earn a World Championship ring in both the NFL (49ers) and the NBA (Bulls).
